Leucorrhoea is commonly known as white discharge. It is a flow of whitish or yellowish discharge of mucus from vagina.

The discharge may be normal or may be a sign of infection. Abnormal leucorrhoea may be caused by infection with bacteria, yeast or other microorganisms.

The discharge may be whitish, yellowish, greenish, or may be blackish in colour.

It is a very common problem in females of reproductive age group. It may be physiological or pathological.

Physiological Leucorrhoea
  • In the reproductive age group, normal vaginal discharge consists of 1 to 4 ml (per 24 hrs), which is white or transparent, thin or thick, and mostly odourless.
  • It is physiological when it is associated with various phases of the menstrual cycle.
  • Changes in vaginal epithelium, changes in normal bacterial flora and pH of vaginal secretions predisposes to leucorrhoea.
Pathological Leucorrhoea

When discharge is associated with problems like backache, itching and burning in vulva, discomfort and general weakness, pain in both legs.

                                                                         

 

Causes: 
  • Unhygienic conditions
  • Chronic illness
  • Malnutrition
  • Retroverted uterus
  • Infections
  • Excessive intake of oily, spicy, and unhealthy food
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Alcohol and smoking
  • Grief and stress
Symptoms:
  • Thick, whitish/yellowish/greenish discharge
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Soreness and dryness of vagina
  • Fish like smelly discharge
  • Backache and pain in leg specially thigh and calf muscles
  • Painful intercourse
  • Itching in vagina
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Digestive disturbances like constipation
  • Tiredness and general weakness
Prevention:
  • Keep the vagina clean by washing regularly with running water.
  • Mild and gentle soap can be used on the outside.
  • Wear cotton and clean undergarments. Avoid wearing damp clothes
  • Avoid overly tight clothing.
  • After going to the bathroom, always wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from getting into the vagina and causing an infection.
  • Avoid sprays, deodorants and strong perfumed soaps and bath products.
  • Never use scented feminine products and douche.
Homoeopathic Medicines for Leucorrhoea: 
  1. Calcarea carb: It is particularly useful in flabby plethoric girls who grow too rapidly. Indicated in girls in whom menstruation starts too early, flows very profusely and lasts too long. The flow is provoked by over exertions and emotions. Leucorrhoea between menses. Before menses, headache, colic, chilliness and leucorrhoea. Leucorrhoea in little girls. There is undue excitement of genital organs leading on to nymphomania. Milky leucorrhoea.
  2. Alumina: Adapted to persons who suffer from chronic illness. Constitutions deficient in animal heat. There is abnormal appetite, craving for starch, chalk, charcoal, cloves, acids and indigestible things. Leucorrhoea that runs down to the thighs and heels. Leucorrhoea is acrid and profuse, transparent with burning. It is worse during daytime and after menses. Relieved by washing with cold water. After menses exhausted physically and mentally.
  3. Sepia: Adapted to persons of dark hair and rigid fibre  but mild and easy disposition. “The washerwoman's remedy,” complaints aggravated by laundry work. It has a very characteristic leucorrhoea discharge. It is bloody, slimy and yellowish. It may also be of a thinner consistency like milk, coming profusely after each urination. Discharge is acrid and gives rise to soreness of parts.
  4. Borax: There is extreme anxiety, especially from downward motion. Sensitive to sudden noises. Leucorrhoea between menses. Leucorrhoea which is profuse, albuminous and starchy. There is a sensation as if warm water is falling down. Menses too soon and profuse with nausea and pain in the stomach which extends to the lumbo-sacral region.
  5. Kreosotum: Indicated in persons of dark complexion, lean, poorly nourished, overgrown, very tall for her age. There are corrosive discharges from mucous membranes. Leucorrhoea is putrid, acrid and corrosive which stains clothing yellow and stiffens them like starch. There is much burning and itching of parts. It has a odour of green corn. Menes too early and profuse which flow on lying down and cease on sitting and walking about.
  6. Kali bichrom: Yellow tenacious leucorrhoea. There is marked itching and burning of parts. Discharge is so thick that it can be drawn into strings. Swelling of parts.
  7. Pulsatilla: Indicated specially for a mild, gentle and yielding disposition. Weeps easily. Women inclined to be fleshy, with scanty and protracted menses. Leucorrhoea is acrid, burning and creamy. Suppressed menses from getting feet wet. Thirstlessness. Person is chilly.
  8. Graphites: Suited to women who are inclined to obesity. There is a history of delayed menstruation. Excessive cautiousness, timidness, unable to decide anything. Leucorrhoea, acrid and excoriating, occurs in gushes day and night. Leucorrhoea before and after menses.
  9. Ambra grisea: Suitable to excitable, nervous and weak girls. Leucorrhoea is thick, bluish-white mucus, especially at night. There is discharge of blood between periods, at every little accident. Itching with soreness and swelling of vagina. Nymphomania.
  10. Ammonium carb: Stout, fleshy women with various troubles as a consequence of a sedentary lifestyle. Delicate women. Leucorrhoea is acrid, burning, and watery. Itching of the parts. Menses too early and profuse. There is much pain and soreness in thighs. Cholera-like symptoms sat the commencement of menstruation.
  11. Ammonium mur: Leucorrhoea is like white of an egg. There is pain around the navel. Leucorrhoea brown, slimy after every urination. Menses too early, dark and clotted, flow more at night. Adapted to those who are fat and sluggish. Body large and fatty and legs too thin
  12. Caulophyllum: Leucorrhoea with moth spots on the forehead. Leucorrhoea is acrid, exhausting and profuse. Leucorrhoea in little girls. There is habitual abortion from uterine debility.
